dependence and responsibility

Unless the Lord builds the house,
those who build it labor in vain.
Unless the Lord watches over the city,
the watchman stays awake in vain.

David - Psa 127.1

Jerry Bridges describes the balance between our dependence on God and personal responsibility.

God is God. We are not. He builds the house. We are invited to participate. Simple.

Definitely a good video. Psalm 127 has always frustrated me so much though. Because the next verses say:

It is in vain that you rise up early
and go late to rest,
eating the bread of anxious toil;
for he gives to his beloved sleep.

Now I don't usually have a problem with this when it comes to work. But when it comes to pursuing God, I wonder if the early rising and late resting are good or are misguided.

I always wanted to badly to get up early to seek God and to stay up late into the night. But I have a hard time fitting that desire into this passage.
