This is how I play guitar - at least in my mind. Steve Vai rocks!!! And I like that suit he's wearing.

Rick, I'm an unwilling jazz snob. I try to be a good music ambassador, but it's hard when there are so many truly fascinating jazz artists who never get the publicity.

Joe Pass is a great place to really pick up the genre. My late buddy Joey C -- a former Pass student -- turned me on to him. Joey was a Vineyard session musician and later a member of our church. He really showed me how applicable Pass's musicality -- not just his chops -- are applicable to all kinds of music. Joe Pass was once obsessed with the legend of Django Reinhardt, which led to an unfortunate decade or more of obscurity and drugs. But Pass came out of it and, without truly realizing it, had surpassed even Django with his playing.

Other guitarists who really turn my ear with their fantastic ear for melodies and chops are John Scofield and Mike Stern. Scofield's early funk/fusion might be more appealing to you now, but I guarantee any study of Scofield will lead to an obsession with his second-line New Orleans stuff. His sound is impeccable.

I'm really a drummer treading into unknown waters, but I've always appreciated great musicians of any instrument!

God bless, bro ...

And just in case people forget I'm a drummer, here's a Vinnie clip for passers by.

I think that might be Robben Ford on guitar. When Vinnie actually leaves some room for other musicians, I mean. LOL!

Christopher Parkening is more of my liking. He's also John MacArthur's favorite musician. Here's a link. (Sorry I don't know how to make shorter links. How do you do that?)
