five love languages critiqued

I have never heard anything but praise for Gary Chapman's The Five Love Languages. Justin Taylor provides an excellent summary of an even more excellent critique written by David Powlison. If you have just a few minutes, read Taylor's summary. If you have more time to read and reflect, Powlison's review is worth the time.

Just found you through Naked P and am going to head over to read these articles. I just posted on the 5LL the other day which are quite simplistic but do seem to help. Looking forward to seeing another point of view. Thanks.

Oh, and NICE BLOG!

I should have clarified my take on the critique. The 5LL's are fine if read from the perspective of "how can I understand the needs of others and meet them there?" But, many people read this the other way around, that is, "this is how I am and other people need to show up to me in a way that acknowledges that."

The latter is not what we as Christians want.
