John Piper in Bloodlines:
The entire universe exists to display the greatness of the glory of the grace of God manifest supremely in Jesus Christ dying in the place of sinners. Paul says in Colossians 1:16, concerning Christ, “All things were created through him and for him.” “For him” does not mean that Christ needed them. It does not mean that he was defective or deficient and that the creation of all things made up for this deficiency.
Rather, it means that all things exist for his glory. That is, they exist to display his greatness. This display is what we were made to enjoy supremely forever. Therefore, the purpose of the universe and the aim of history reach their climax in the supreme display of the glory of Christ for the everlasting enjoyment of his people.
