irenaeus on signs and wonders

I'm always amazed at the gymnastics the cessationist crowd goes through to convince us that there is no historical evidence for signs and wonders since the Apostles.

Irenaeus in the last part of the second century ...
Others have foreknowledge of things to come: they see visions, and utter prophetic expressions. Others still, heal the sick by laying their hands upon them, and they are made whole. Yea, moreover, as I have said, the dead even have been raised up, and remained among us for many years. And what shall I more say? It is not possible to name the number of the gifts which the Church, [scattered] throughout the whole world, has received from God, in the name of Jesus Christ ... but, directing her prayers to the Lord, who made all things ... and calling upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, she has been accustomed to work miracles for the advantage of mankind,

Rick,

I love to read Irenaeus and he has formed much of my theology.

This is why I say I am not a Calvinists nor a Arminius follower. I see grave error in both views.

Yet, a cessationist intrigues me greatly as it seems totally based on one scripture (1 Cor 13:8-10)that is not that clear... yet digging in to it one finds the "perfect" most likely is not the bible, but a "Person" as God is the only perfect thing mentioned in scripture, or the "Coming of the Kingdom" as we exchange the perishable for the imperishable".

Even to call the "perfect" the bible would not mean all prophecy ended as Jesus still needs to fulfill many of the prophecies in the Bible as it is... so it may be "perfect", yet not completely fulfilled and still needs to be proven.

Jesus was perfect on the earth, yet it was unproven until after His death, burial and resurrection. After which He was exalted and was proved worthy and thus was proven perfect and with out defect to place the Father...

So I agree, the argument is very flimsy at best and at worst a denial of God's word at it's fullest. It is as if they want "Christianity" without the Holy Spirit...for now we have the Bible. At least as i have debated this with them I have found this true...

They are people of the book and seem to worship the book in place of the Author... which is a bit weird knowing the Author...

Blessings,
iggy
