Phillips is best for simple NT reading.

Jerusalem is best for sheer majesty.

The TEV (Good News) is great for reading the historical OT books.

The NRSV does a nice job with the Gospels and Acts.

And the Holman isn't a bad middle ground.

On the other hand...

The NLT is like eating Wonder Bread.

The NASB has all the grace of a palsied, arthritic break dancer.

The TNIV somehow made the NIV worse.

The KJV uses words that today seem to mean the opposite of what they did back in 1611.

And reading the Psalms in the ESV is pure torture, like Bill Buckley doing slam poetry.
